This week’s deep dive: Just wow. New Mexico’s child welfare department just deported a 15-year-old citizen.
New Mexico’s Child, Youth, and Families (CYFD) Department has been in crisis for decades.
14 kids have died in state custodianship since 2024. That’s what I mean by crisis.
Beyond shortages everywhere, CYFD’s stubborn insistence on reuniting biological families continues to yield tragic results. On July 6, a 15-year-old boy was told to walk across an international border crossing into Mexico by himself from the Texas side by CYFD. Then they left.
Because the CYFD didn’t even have the mother in Mexico in phone contact, the boy, an American citizen, took off and went to the Border Patrol station.
