This week’s deep dive: I wrote this week’s column about the 25th anniversary of 9/11 from an airplane.
I’ve been writing this column for eight years, so 9/11 has come up a few times. It was a terrible day for our country, and terrible for me and my family. I lived a mile from the Pentagon at the time.
We considered a lot of scenarios in the hours, days and weeks following 9/11. What we would do in case of chemical of biological attack. How we would evacuate a heavily congested metro area.
(No kidding. We planned to walk to the river with rollaboard luggage, our pets, and booze, and charm our way onto one of the privately owned watercraft.)
Eventually, life returned to sort of normal. Americans united. We submitted to intensive government surveillance, which continues to this day with ever-more sophisticated tools.
Much of the 9/11 response was based on a mutual trust relationship between citizens and government. Today, well….
